Weight Loss Psychology

Can’t seem to stick to your diet? There may be a very good reason.

Food as a mood enhancer

There is a predictable drug-like induced pleasure that happens when your teeth sink into a pizza with the works. Your brain shoots out happy signals as the grease drips down your chin.

Let’s face it: food is the cheapest non-prescription mood enhancing drug available.

Self-help psychology

If you find yourself in the “I know what to eat, but don’t eat it” crowd, then it’s time to practice some self-help psychology.

Identify your “negative” mood states

    • tension – often a sense of time urgency or “lack” of time
    • fatigue – mental and physical
    • boredom
    • sadness
    • loneliness or feeling unneeded
    • feeling “unmotivated” (sign of depression)
  • Link mood state to eating behavior
      • Before you reach for a handful of chips, rate your hunger level and check your mood.
      • Eat only if you’re truly hungry – not to change your mood.
  • Lose your perfectionism
      • The fear of being imperfect can cause unnecessary stress and lead to negative self-talk.
  • Alter the emotions, by going through the motions
      • Use activity to lift your mood; don’t try to think your way out.
      • Stock up on healthy foods, and feel better about yourself.
